Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that is already present naturally, throughout the body. Natural hyaluronic acid is present in the skin, the joints, the eyes and other organs. It acts as a water holding sponge and hydrates the tissues. It also has shock absorbing properties.

Over time and with age, the levels of HA in the body become depleted. This becomes very noticeable especially in the skin and the lips. On the face and neck, the skin starts to lose volume and becomes more flaccid. In some areas the skin starts to sag and some features lose their shape and 3-D projection. For example, the lips become thinner and flatter.

Synthetic HA dermal fillers are almost identical to the natural HA produced by the body. They are non-permanent fillers and are broken down in the body to carbon dioxide and water, which are then excreted naturally.

This type of dermal filler, like its natural counterpart, acts a water holding sponge. When injected into the tissues at various depths, it plumps them up and reduces unwanted folds and wrinkles. By softening or eliminating the signs of ageing, the face looks naturally younger. Its placement also causes the added benefit of boosting collagen production in the skin where it is placed. This process is called ‘collagenesis’. It adds strength to the skin.

The dermal fillers can also be used to change the shape of a facial feature, such as a nose, without resorting to surgical procedures. There are many ways that this material can be used to improve the appearance of the face and the texture of the skin. Below are some examples:
